I am thinking of using Flash 6 swf files (latest swf format) in the future, and providing Flash MX (Version 6) only .fla files. Here're some reasons.
- I like to have Flash file that works on different languages of Windows and Flash MX supports unicode
- Flash 5 is pretty old
- Some people couldn't open the Flash 5 fla with Flash MX?
Also, I like to make themes easily installable. I know a zip file will work, but how about if I provide a NSIS (Nullsoft installer) script so people can just double click and install?
Regarding security, there doesn't seem to be a way to disable GetURL and still having things work. In the future I plan on having some way in the control panel of telling the user that a theme is marked as 'safe/checked'. You will of course still be able to load any theme you want, but safe/checked themes will be code signed (like secure email). I may provide a service to check third party themes and mark them as 'safe/checked' as well.
Basically, this whole thing will work like you are installing a driver and it asks you that it is not signed by Microsoft.
