Unable to deploy firefox via group policy

Post by edwimb » Wed Apr 07, 2010 9:37 am

Hello all,

I am unable to deploy firefox 3.6.3 via a software installation grouop policy. My server is Windows Server 2k8 x64, and my test client is Windows XP x32. I downloaded the .msi and made an admin share by running msiexec /a. I made sure the users have access to the share. I created a computer group policy and pointed it to the admin share. I put the test computer in the OU with the policy. I ran gpupdate on the server and client. I reboot client, software doesn't install on boot.

I ran a gpresult on the client and it shows the firefox policy listed as being on the client. If I browse to the admin share as a user I am able to double click on the .msi and install it manually. I have the Group Policy Preference Client Side Extensions for Windows XP patch installed on the client computer. I have another software install policy running ont he same machine that I wrote for Acrobat 9, and it works.

Why isn't this installing? If we don't get this working soon we are going to have to walk around to 150 computers... Please help.

Where exactly did you create the install options to run the Firefox .msi?

I'm having the same problem. but i'm running window 2k3 and xp client. When i restart the XP client, I saw the "intalling firefox.." before load to the login screen. After I login, I don't see firefox on there. Any ideas???

Here what I have

Server: Windows Server 2003
Clients: XP Professional
OU: Test OU (Yes, GPO is enabled on correct OU, and computer is in the Test OU)
FMFirefoxCE-3.6.3-en-US.msi

1. I downloaded the Community Edition MSI and FirefoxADM files.
2. I went into GPO and created a new GPO object called TestOU and enforced it.
3. In Computer Config > Software Settings > Software Installation, I added the msi I downloaded that is available on a network share
4. Added Locked ADM template to Administrative Templates and changed only the Homepage setting to enabled (filled in company intranet page for homepage)
5. Restarted Client Machine

well, the thing that comes to mind is permissions on the admin share? (apologies if it seems blindingly obvious!)

the steps i took to successfully deploy frontmotion are:

1. do admin install to share of frontmotion MSI
2. in new GPO, deploy frontmotion MSI (browsing via My Network Places, server, admin share, sub folder then the actual MSI - NOT via a network drive [N: etc])
3. GPO is linked to domain, and filtered to specific computers (not users)
4. when testing i remotely run gpupdate /force on a test pc, then reboot it
5. should then install after reboot
