I am just wondering, are there any sample files which I could download in order to try creating my own theme? Or these files are not freely distributed?

I tried opening Luna in Macromedia Flash, but it cant be edited, it just plays the animation. Perhaps I am doing something wrong?

I would be very grateful if anyone would be willing to point me in the right direction.

did you open the Luna.fla file?

*.swf files can't be edited.
